Cabinets of Curiosities | Shoreditch Design Triangle: Palazzo x Kite
Palazzo
Palazzo is a London-based label established in 2021 by Carla Palazzo.
Born and raised in Italy, she moved to London in 2017 and graduated in Fashion Design at the Sir John Cass School of Art in June 2020.
Abstract Conceptualism is what best defines Palazzo's design practice. Nonetheless, her ultimate artistic intent is to create "Wearable Atmospheres" of a soft and sculptural ethereal matter.
Carla has called Shoreditch home for the past four years. The mix of people and cultures is what makes our neighbourhood so special. We spoke to Carla to find out what drew here here, where she finds her inspiration and why fashion can be emotional.
What inspiration do you draw from Shoreditch?
Shoreditch is about atmosphere and contemporaneity. The electric concentration of creativity can be felt and seen around every corner as it feeds the potential for something new. As a creative, you never feel left out, it's a here and now.
Personally, it's the connection with other artists and their work that inspires me the most, a momentum that encourages dusty ideas to become projects.
Does your work reflect your community and if so, in what way?
My work starts from an inward abstract experience, later proposed to the outside through a tangible piece. Its ultimate aim is to let people experience an atmosphere. Some visual or emotional “place” that, allows them to escape the reality for the time they wear or look at my clothes. I believe that what I create is a projection of a made-up realm, bound to reflect how I would like the world to be.
If you could collaborate with any Shoreditch-based artist - past or present, living or dead - who would you choose and why?
A collaboration with the YKK (Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha) showroom in Shoreditch is something I look forward to. I am both fascinated and inspired by the attention the company has always put in the development of the zip's single components. Aware of the quality of their products, it would be significantly challenging to exhibit and creating something that blends with the minimal aesthetic of their interior.
I would love to reinterpret the story behind YKK's methodology to define what development, innovation, and continuity look like when creating a whole garment.
Kite Eyewear
Kite Eyewear is an independent British brand re-imagining the world of eyewear as you know it.
They pride themselves on being the most creative eyewear design team in the country, with the most innovative production process using the most high-quality components. Every single pair of Kite glasses and sunglasses starts its journey in the Kite Lab - our dedicated London design studio - where the finest minds in eyewear are given free rein to experiment with new styles, materials and components.
These designs are brought to life by experienced artisans in the tiny Italian town of Belluno, who lovingly handcraft every pair of frames. No giant factories, no robotic assembly lines - instead an intricate 30-stage production process that results in defiantly distinctive opticals.
It's this commitment to quality and craftsmanship at every step that makes us who we are.
